[Also in Division F2] An underwater breathing apparatus comprising a high-pressure source of breathable gas, a demand regulator and a snorkel tube, has a shut-off valve between the source and the regulator in a position readily accessible to the user, this valve being additional to the normal stop valve of the gas source. The air supply is stored in a cylinder 11, Fig. 1, provided with its customary stop valve and this is connected through a flexible tube 13 and the shut-off valve 15 to the pressure regulator 14 for supply to the face mask 16. The mask also carries a pivotally adjustable breathing tube 17, having a stop cock 18, for use when the user is on the surface. When the user rises to the surface after diving, he closes the valve 15 and opens valve 18 and there is no loss of high-pressure air from the tube 13. The valve 15 comprises two body sections 36, Fig. 2, and 22, the former carrying a valve member 42 which bears against a nylon seating 29 in the inlet section 22. These two sections may be separated, to allow the passage of gas through the central bore, by rotating a cap 59 which is associated with a sleeve 50. The body section 22 cannot move axially relative to the rotatable parts 59, 50, owing to a flange 23 engaged within an annular gap 62, but the sleeve 50 is threaded, at 54, on to the body section 36, so that the latter is moved axially according to the direction of rotation. Excessive slackening of the valve is prevented by a washer 47 moving within a recess 53. Specifications 775,314 and 898,211 are referred to. |
