PURPOSE:To prevent a ruled line image from breaking, by providing a preserving means which preserves a character inserted to a position indicated by a space insertion indicating means, at a character preservation area. CONSTITUTION:In a character generating device, the first preserving means and the second preserving means are provided. The first preserving means preserves the character at an indicated insertion objected position, at a one character preservation area S1. Also, the second preserving means refers the characters at the same character position at every indication of character position, and preserves the same characters at a one character preserving area S2, corresponding to a referred result. And when a ruled line character is present at the character position in the next column of the character preserved at the area S1 by the space insertion indicating means, the character position processed by the second preserving means is not advanced to the position of the ruled line character, but to the position of in the next column, or the line head of the ruled line at a column position smaller than that of the ruled line character. In this way, it is possible to insert one character space without breaking the ruled line.
