PURPOSE:To produce a high output over the entire operating range by coupling a long normal use path and a short high speed path to respective surge tanks when providing a valve in a piping for communicating both surge tanks and opening/closing said valve corresponding to the operating condition of engine. CONSTITUTION:In a multi-cylinder engine where two intake valves are provided for every cylinder, a long normal path 7e and a short high speed path 7d are coupled to respective intake valves. Said paths are coupled to respective surge tanks 11 which are coupled to a communication pipe 16 at the end sections. A gate valve 17 is disposed in the center of the communication path 16 and a gate valve 7f is disposed in the high speed path 7d. Under low speed operation of engine, both valves 7f, 17 close while under intermediate speed operation, only the valve 17 opens. Consequently, the characteristic of the surge tank varies to match with the intake pulsation under the intermediate speed operation. Under high speed operation, the valve 7f also opens to intake a large quantity of air.
