A mutant Azotobacter Vinelandii capable of fixing nitrogen in soil in concns. higher than known wild strains, is produced by irradiating Azotobacter Vinelandii strain 382 DSM in a current of sterile air in an electric field formed by impulses of 2H210mS, 10mA mean intensity and 10V potential, for 48 hours with Pt electrodes. The substrate is 2% glucose with 1 ppm Na2MoO5, 3 ppm FeSO4.Th2O, 0.2 g/l. KH2PO4 and 0.8 g/l K2HPO4, at pH 7.4 and 28 deg.C, with air flow rate 80 l/h.
