A method of firing glazed articles in a continuous kiln in which the articles are preheated to a firing temperature at which the glaze becomes molten, comprises subjecting the articles to direct heating by burners 15 in the preheating region of the kiln, subjecting the articles to indirect heating by radiant burners 15A in the region of the kiln in which they attain the firing temperature, and directing products of combustion from the radiant burners 15A through ducts 18 into contact with the articles at or before the preheating region. Preheating is controlled by sensors which operate valves 19 in ducts 18 and also if the combustion gases in ducts 18 are too hot, admit cool air via ducts 20.

|
