<p>Squalene, for use in cosmetics, pharmacy and lubrication of mechanisms, is made by (a) esterifying by-prods. of distillative refining, by entraining olive oil vapours with a polyhydroxy alcohol in presence of SnCl2; (b) extracting the unsaponifiable material by steam distn. to obtain a crude; (c) hydrogenating and (d) purifying the crude by saponification with KOH in methanol, vacuum distn., decolorising with active carbon and decolorising earths, and dewaxing by cooling to 0 deg.C and filtration.</p> |
