PURPOSE:To increase the amt. of water absorption and water retention by coating or impregnating an aq. soln. prepd. by adding an initiator, etc., to >=1 kinds of water soluble monomers having alpha,beta-unsatd. bonds onto or into a porous base material then subjecting the material to a heat treatment. CONSTITUTION:The aq. soln. is prepd. by adding the initiator and if necessary, a crosslinking agent to >=1 kinds of the water soluble monomers such as acrylic acid, methacrylic acid or the alkali metal salt, etc., having the alpha,beta-unsatd. bonds. The aq. soln. contg. the above-mentioned monomers, initiator, and crosslinking agent is coated on the porous base material by a method such as spray coating, dip coating, etc., and the material is subjected to the heat treatment for 5min-6 hr in a thermostatic chamber kept at 40-200 deg.C, by which a highly water absorptive water retentive material is produced. The porous base material is exemplified by a woven fabric, non-woven fabric, cotton, polymer foam, porous ceramics, etc.
