The invention comprises polyethers of tetrafluoroethylene epoxide having the general formula CF3-CH2-O-(CF2-CF2-O-)nCF2-COX wherein n=0 or is n the integer and X is F, OH, OR, NH2, NHR or a salt radical OM (e.g. ON or OK) where R is a monovalent organic radical and M is a monovalent metal. The compound where X=F may be prepared by contacting tetrafluoroethylene epoxide with activated charcoal at -80 DEG to +40 DEG C. Subsequent hydrolysis and introduction of -OR, -NH2, NHR and salt groups OM may take place by known methods. Example (1) describes the preparation of polymers having molecular weights of approximately 600, 1,000, 2,550 and 4,700 and Example (2) the preparation of compounds where n = 0, 1 or 2 and the conversion of these products to the above-mentioned derivatives, e.g. the acid fluoride of the trimer is treated with (1) methanol to give the methyl ester, (2) water to give the acid, (3) aqueous NaOH or KOH to give the sodium or potassium salt of the acid. (4) MgCO3 to give the magnesium salt. (5) ammonia bubbled through a solution of the trimer in perfluorodimethylcyclobutane to give the amide. (6) methylamine bubbled through the solution in (5) to give the methylamine salt and (7) ice and NH4OH to give the amide. Tetrafluoroethylene epoxide is prepared by oxidation of tetrafluoromethylene with molecular oxygen in presence of either actinic radiation or a free radical source e.g. bromine.ALSO:The invention comprises polyethers of tetrafluoroethylene epoxide having the general formula CF3-CF2-O-(CF2-CF2-O)nCF2-COX where n=0 or an integer e.g. up to 100 or more, and X is F, OH, OR, NH, NHR or a salt radical OM, where R is a monovalent organic radical and M is a monovalent metal e.g. Na or K. The compound where X=F may be prepared by contacting tetrafluoroethylene epoxide with activated charcoal at -80 DEG to +40 DEG C. Subsequent hydrolysis to -COOH and introduction of OR, NH2, -NHR and salt groups OM may take place by known methods. The products are extremely soluble in perfluorocarbon solvents. Example (1) describes the preparation of polymers having molecular weights of 600, 1,000, 2,550 and 4,700. The polyethers are suitable for use as lubricants or hydraulic fluids. |
