NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I [Y is halogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, cyano, etc.; n is 1-5; R is formula II (R<1> and R<2> are H, halogen or methyl)]. EXAMPLE:N-(alpha-Allylthio)cyanomethyl-3-chlorobenzamide. USE:A herbicide for paddy field and agricultural and horticultural germicide, having a wide optimum period, useful as a herbicide for rice plants with slight phytotoxicity and capable of exhibiting improved activity particularly against downy mildew, damping-off, etc., as a germicide. PREPARATION:An acid chloride expressed by formula III is reacted with aminoacetonitrile and the resultant reaction product is then treated with a halogenating agent to give a compound expressed by formula IV, which is further reacted with a mercaptan expressed by formula V to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I.
