PURPOSE:To conduct a good printing on any paper, by providing a head pressure mechanism control means which detects a printing on a carton through a paper thickness detection mechanism and sets a pressing force of a thermal head against a platen higher than that in a printing on a plain paper. CONSTITUTION:A head pressure mechanism control part 11 rotates a stepping motor 10 by a step S1 due to detection of a printing on a plain paper 3, thereby setting a spring 7 to have a full length a1. On the other hand, if detecting a printing on a carton 13 through a paper thickness detection mechanism 12, the head pressure mechanism control part 11 rotates the stepping motor 10 by a step S2 prior to a start of printing, thus a cam 8 pushes up a shaft, here, S2>S1. A thermal head 1 is pressed up against a platen 2 through the carton 13 and an ink ribbon 4, and the full length of the spring 7 is reduced to a2.
