PURPOSE:A thallium activated alkali halide fluorescent substance which has a specific composition, shows stimulating emission of high luminance and a short emission life when excited with stimulation. CONSTITUTION:The thallium activated alkali halide fluorescent substance shown by the general formula MX: aTl [M is Na, K, Rb or Cs; X is Cl, Br or I (X is I when M is Na and X is Br or I when M is K); a is in 0<a<=0.2 (preferably 10<-6=a<=10<-2>)]. The fluorescent substance is obtained by packing a fluorescent substance raw material mixture to a heat-resistant container such as quartz crucible, alumina crucible, etc., and calcining the mixture by an electric furnace preferably in a neutral or oxidizing atmosphere preferably at 400-1,000 deg.C for 0.2-10hr.
