PURPOSE:To obtain a 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline compound which is an intermediate for agricultural chemicals, medicines, dyes or surfactansts in good yield, by selectively hydrogenating the nitrogen-containing ring of a quinoline compound in the presence of an Rb-CO based catalyst under water gas shifting condition. CONSTITUTION:A quinoline compound expressed by the formula (R1 and R2 are H or alkyl or nitro), e.g. quinoline, etc., is subjected to selective hydrogenation of the nitrogen-containing ring thereof in the presence of carbon monoxide and water and further an Rb-CO based catalyst, e.g. Rh6(CO)16, etc., in a molar amount of preferably 0.005-0.1, particularly 0.005-0.05 based on the raw material quinoline to afford the aimed 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline compound, e.g. 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline, etc. The used catalyst can be reused. EFFECT:This method can be readily practiced and is industrially avantageous. |
