PURPOSE:To improve a vertical magnetic characteristic by providing a specific thin vertically magnetically anisotropic film contg. Co as an essential material directly or via a magnetic or nonmagnetic underlying layer on a nonmagnetic substrate. CONSTITUTION:The thin vertically magnetically anisotropic film of a magnetic recording medium contains Co as an essential material and contains <=24wt% Cr and <=20wt% at least one kind of elements selected from Ge, C, B, Si, and Ti. The elements such as Ge, C, B, Si and Ti to be added to the thin vertically magnetically anisotropic film have the effect of improving the coercive force He in the vertical direction even if a slight amt. of such elements are added and incorporated into said film. The elements such as Ge, C, B, Si, and Ti to be added may be the metallic oxides and are satisfactory if the elements form a nonmagnetic layer at the column boundary. The thin Co-Cr alloy film is usually formed at a low substrate temp. by a vacuum deposition or sputtering method. The coercive force Hc in the vertical direction is thereby improved.
