PURPOSE:To reduce the size of an image reader and to attain highly accurate reading by reading out plural lines for one pulse from an encoder by using a two-dimensional image sensor and continuously connecting these lines. CONSTITUTION:The two-dimensional image sensor 6 is manually moved up to a reading range 9, a character or graphic 10 on an original is read out, a roller or a ring 1 and the encoder 2 are rotated interlocking with the movement of the sensor 6, a mark is read out by a light emitting element 3 and a photoelectric transducer 4, and a reading pulse is generated. The waveform of the reading pulse is shaped by a square pulse shaping circuit 17 and the shaped pulse is inputted to a sensor buffer circuit 15 to monitor the signal outputted from the encoder 2. On the other hand, an image in a reading range 9 is read out by the sensor 6 in accordance with a clock generated from a sensor clock generating circuit 14, binary-coded by a level correcting binary- coding circuit 13 and inputted to the circuit 15. An image buffer synthesizing circuit 16 successively synthesizes the outputs of the circuit 13, so that the reading accuracy of the sensor 6 is improved.
