PURPOSE:To obtain a low-cost corrosion inhibitor for metals having superior biodegradation resistance by polymerizing an unsatd. carboxylic acid monomer represented by a specified general formula in the presence of hypophosphorous acid or a salt thereof and by using the resulting polymer having a specified degree of polymn. as an essential component. CONSTITUTION:An unsatd carboxylic acid monomer represented by the general formula (where each of A<1> and A<2> is H, -CH3 or -COOX<2>, A<1> and A<2> are not simultaneously -COOX<2>, A<3> is H, -CH3 or -CH2COOX<3>, when A<3> is -CH2COOX<3>, each of A<1> and A<2> is H or -CH3 and each of X<1>, X<2> and X<3> is H, a univalent metal, a bivalent metal, -NH4 or org. amine) is polymerized in the presence of hypophosphorous acid and/or a salt thereof added in 0.01-0.3 molar ratio to the monomer. The resulting polymer having 5-100 degree of polymn. is used as an essential component and an inorg. or org. corrosion inhibitor is added as required. Thus, a corrosion inhibitor for metals capable of maintaining the corrosion inhibiting power for a long period, having low foamability and showing superior performance even in a highly concd. state is simply obtd. at a low cost.
