PURPOSE:To successively reduce the overhead of a CPU by successively selecting pages turning off reference bits with priority from a group turning off its reference bit first in a main storage to secure necessary pages. CONSTITUTION:The main storage 10 is divided into groups G1-Gn and start address and end address information of respective groups is stored in a main storage group control table 11. A reference bit OFF part 14 is periodically started by a timer control part 13 and the OFF part 14 turns off the reference bit R of a group in the table 11 specified by a current group point 12. A page seizing processing part 15 is started when available pages to be in assign-abled status are lacking. The group selected by a group selecting part 16 is the group whose bit R is first turned off by the OFF part 14 and a page selecting part 18 makes the page turning off its bit R selected by the selecting part 16 available. Thus, the overhead of the CPU can be reduced.
