PURPOSE:To manufacture a diffraction grating which has a radial grating groove having radial centers at optional positions or arcuate grating grooves having optical radii of curvature by moving linearly and rotating a grating raw material in synchronism with the reciprocal motion of a tool. CONSTITUTION:The tool 11 for grating groove engraving which is fitted on a tool moving table 16 moving reciprocally along a reciprocal motion guide 17 moves reciprocally on the surface of the grating raw material 12 to engrave one grating groove in the surface of the raw material 12 by one-time reciprocation. The raw material 12, on the other hand, is fixed on a grating turntable 13 which is fitted on a linear moving table 14 move linearly as show by an arrow through a gear 22 and a feed screw 15 across a rotary guide mechanism which has a center axis 23 of rotation crossing the center axis of the screw 15 at right angles. This table 13 has a sign bar mechanism composed of a sign bar guide plate 19 moving linearly in the axial direction of a screw 20 and a sign bar 18. The raw material 1 is moved linearly by the moving table 14 and also rotated according to the linear movement of the guide plate 19 for each grating groove engraving operation.
