PURPOSE:To enhance the efficiency of a fluorescent lamp, by covering an electrode with a spherical hollow cover having an opening toward a positive column, to eliminate a Faraday dark space from which light is not emitted. CONSTITUTION:An electrode 3 is covered with a nearly-spherical hollow cover 8 having an opening 9 toward a positive column. The cover 8 is made of transparent glass and electrically insulated from the electrode 3. A fluorescent substance 10 is applied to the inside surface of the cover 8. The constitution of the spherical cover 8 is such that two hemispheres are stuck to each other without using another material and sandwich two lead wires supporting the electrode 3. As a result, most of the high-energy electrons in a negative glow 4 recombine on the inside surface of the spherical cover 8, and very few of the electrons diffuse through the opening 9. For that reason, a Faraday darks space is almost all eliminated so that the negative glow 4 and a positive column 6 are directly coupled to each other.
