In order to seal off the end of a tube 10, such as a heat exchanger tube used in a nuclear power station, a dismantlable stopper 12 is placed in this end. This stopper comprises a member 20 of variable diameter, having knurled features 20d on its outer surface. The stopper 12 is fixed in the tube 10 by increasing the diameter of the member 20, which is done for example by axially moving a nut 18 screwed on a rod 14 whose rotation is caused, the nut 18 being immobilised rotationally in the member 20 and interacting with the latter via frustoconical surfaces 18a, 20a. Sealing is obtained separately by compressing seals 26, 28, for example using a manoeuvring nut 16 screwed to the rod 14. <IMAGE>
