PURPOSE:To provide a method which enables smooth utilization of energy in an iron mill, reduction in the burden of facilities and improvement in treatment efficiency, and which comprises treating a coke oven gas in the individual recovery lines of the initial stage, medium stage and final stage carbonizations. CONSTITUTION:The gas of a coke oven X is treated in an initial-stage carbonization recovery line A, a medium-stage carbonization recovery line B, and a final-stage carbonization recovery line C. Suction main pipes a, b, and c are connected to recovery lines A, B and C respectively. An initial-stage oven gas which was recovered in the recovery line A is allowed to cool in a cooling apparatus 8A and transferred through an exhauster 9 to a processing apparatus 10A, where oily matter such as tar is removed and recovered. The gas is then stored as a high-calorie gas in a holder 11. A medium- stage oven gas which was recovered in the recovery line B is passed through a cooling apparatus 8B, an exhauster 9 and a processing apparatus 10B and is directly fed into a site for utilization, where it is used as a fuel. On the other hand, a final-stage oven gas which was recovered in the recovery line C is immediately applied to heat recovery in a sensible heat recovery apparatus 12 because of its small oily matter content and transferred through an exhauster 9 to a hydrogen production apparatus 13, where hydrogen is separated and recovered.
