PURPOSE:To produce an unsaturated polyester excellent in flexibility and flame retardancy, by reacting a reaction product of a specified acid component with an alcohol component with dibromoneopentyl glycol. CONSTITUTION:An acid component (A) containing an alpha,beta-unsaturated dibasic acid (anhydride) [e.g., maleic acid (anhydride)] and another polybasic acid (e.g., fumaric acid) is reacted with an alcohol component (C) (e.g., ethylene glycol) other than dibromoneopentyl glycol (B) at 160-220 deg.C until the conversion of component C reaches at least 50%, component B is added to the reaction mixture and is reacted at 150-170 deg.C, or part 6 of components A and B is reacted with component C until the conversion of component C reaches at least 50%; and the remaining part of components A and B is added to the reaction mixture and reacted.
