PURPOSE:To obtain methacrylonitrile useful as a raw material for synthetic resin, synthetic fibers, etc., in high selectivity, by reacting propionitrile with methanol in the presence of a specific catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Propionitrile is reacted with methanol in the presence of a catalyst obtained by adding at least one metallic ion selected from chromium, iron and manganese to magnesium oxide at 250-450 deg.C, preferably 300-400 deg.C to give the aimed substance. The weight of the metallic ion added to magnesium oxide is preferably 0.5-10wt% based on the weight of magnesium oxide and the reaction is carried out by using methanol in a molar ratio of methanol to propionitrile of 2-30 excess amount. |
