PURPOSE:To easily and stably conduct the charging of coke at a predetermined rate, by closing a lid of a coke charging hopper and flowing a cooling inert gas until the concn. of a combustible gas contained in the hopper reaches a peak value. CONSTITUTION:A lid 3 of a hopper charged with coke 1 is closed. A limit switch 50 is operated to switch flow rate regulating valves 57, 63, 70 and an output oxygen concn. controller 66 of a catalyst reactor 32 from a manual operation to an automatic operation. The output of an inert gas flow rate arithmetic unit 52 is increased to a preset predetermined flow rate to flow a cooling inert gas into the hopper 2 at a first predetermined flow rate until the concn. of a combustible gas contained in the hopper 2 reaches a peak value while a mixed gas contained in the hopper 2 is taken out at the first predetermined flow rate. Then, the cooling inert gas is flown at a second predetermined flow rate until the output of a combustible gas concn. detector 51 is lowered to a predetermined value or less. A combustible gas concn. controller 53 is switched from a manual operation to an automatic operation to gradually decrease the output of the inert gas arithmetic unit 52 to a rated flow rate of treatment in response to the peaks value of the combustible gas concn. At the same time, the rated flow rate is corrected so that the concn. of the combustible gas contained in the hopper 2 is lowered to a predetermined value or less.
