PURPOSE:The titled composition, containing an oyster meat extract as an active ingredient, capable of extinguishing symptoms, e.g. delusion, auditory hallucina tion, thinking disturbance, etc., in several weeks and useful as a remedy for schizophrenia, particularly hebephrenic schizophrenia, etc. CONSTITUTION:A composition for treating schizophrenia containing an oyster meat extract consisting of, e.g. hot water extract of oyster meat, preferably precipitates obtained by fractionating further the above-mentioned extract with an alcohol or enzymic hydrolyzate of the oyster meat extract, etc., as an active ingredient. The oyster meat extract is preferably an extract containing an abundant zinc chelate compound having particularly the following properties; (1) <=5,000 molecular weight mesured by gel filtration analysis using Sephadex, (2) containing taurine and Zn as principal constituent ingredients, (3) positive to ninhydrin reaction, (4) soluble in water and (5) UV absorption; the maximum absorption at 270-280nm. The effect on paranoid schizophrenia is remarkably increased by using a chlropromazine based pharmaceutical together. |
