PURPOSE:To shorten time for measurement and heighten accuracy of measurement by measuring efficiency of electromagnetic conversion of a magnetic head directly, using MR blocks arranged with magnetic resistance MR elements raised parallel. CONSTITUTION:Side faces of a substrate 1 formed by erecting three parallel sheets are covered with MR elements 2 and thin films of electrode 3, and this is enclosed with an MR block B to constitute the instrument. The backside of the substrate 1 is in contact with a magnetic head 4. When measuring efficiency of reproduction by the instrument measuring current is applied from a power source 12 to a central element MR2, and a signal magnetic field is generated in the gap part of the head 4, and induced voltage is displayed in an oscilloscope 14 through a pre-amplifier 13. When measuring efficiency of recording, signal current is applied from a current voltage amplifier 15 to the head 4, and vertical component of generated magnetic field is taken out by elements MR1, MR3 as change of current, and displayed in the oscilloscope 14 through the amplifier 13. Thus, time for measurement can be shortened and accuracy can be heightened by eliminating actual use of a medium and eliminating variance and spacing variation of the medium.
