The helical garter spring of a ready-to-install lip sealing ring, which spring rests on the sealing lip, is bonded to the sealing lip in a manner which prevents it from coming off using an adhesive which is effective only before the seal is installed at the sealing location. By means of relatively small spring retention collars, it is thus possible to design the lip sealing ring without the risk of spring-groove tears. After installation, the then expanded sealing lip retains the garter spring securely without an adhesive joint, even where the spring retention collars are small, while the adhesive used loses its effect and melts, softens and/or vaporises at operating temperature or the radial spring force of the garter spring comes fully into effect under operating conditions and the lip sealing ring is fully functional. <IMAGE>
