In a ballast finisher for railway tracks, the ballast (6) to be placed is supplied to a distributing screw (14) arranged, seen in the working direction (A) of the finisher, at its front end, adjacent to which screw, opposite the working direction (A) of the finisher, is a tamping beam (16) and a smoothing beam (18). Distributor screw (14), clamping beam (16) and smoothing beam (18) are arranged, seen in the working direction of the finisher, in front of the tracklaying truck (2) of the finisher. In this way, the finisher moves on the compacted ballast bed (8) which it has produced, thereby avoiding disturbing transverse grooves in the formation (4) caused by the finisher. <IMAGE>
