PURPOSE:To obtain high output at the time of high-density recording and to prevent the decrease of output by heating by forming a magnetic coated film of a magnetic coating compd. consisting of Co-contg. gamma-Fe2O3 powder in a manner as to have shape anisotropy and crystal anisotropy in combination at a suitable ratio. CONSTITUTION:The Co-contg. gamma-Fe2O3 powder is used for the magnetic powder and is kneaded together with a binder resin, antistatic agent, dispersant, lubricating agent, curing agent, solvent, etc., to prepare the magnetic coating compd. Such magnetic coating compd. is coated on a substrate 2 such as base film to form a magnetic film 6. The film is not subjected to an orientation treatment or its subjected to a non-orientation treatment in the above-mentioned coating stage, for example, is subjected to non-orientation coating to about 1mum thickness, drying and curing, so that the magnetic powder has 0.65-0.75 squareness ratio in any intra-surface direction of the coated film thereof. The high output is then obtd. in high-density recording even if the relative speed of a head and medium is small and the thermally stable magnetic recording medium is obtd.
