A device for compacting refuse which is composed of packaging material and waste which can be easily compressed, such as cardboard boxes, light plastic and wood packaging, paper, offcuts and wood and plastic chips, in an upwardly open container by means of a compacting roller which engages in the container, rotates and circulates on the refuse and is supported by means of a stand which overhangs the container, a vertically extending shaft being arranged on a stand arm which overlaps the refuse container and having at its lower end a horizontally extending support for the compaction roller, the roller resting on the refuse under its own weight and the arm forming part of a lifting device on the stand side, so that the compacting roller executes a movement relative to the container during the compacting process as the filling level of the container increases, and the compacting roller executing a continuously alternating forward and backward movement, is to be designed in such a way that the density of the compressed bales is to be increased and a bale which is dimensionally stable to a substantial extent is produced. To achieve this, provision has been made according to the invention for a moistening device having at least one water nozzle which points towards the refuse to be compressed is built into the device, and for the nozzle to be actuable whenever the compacting roller is converted from forward to backward motion and vice versa.
