The invention relates to a flow-directed catheter for human and veterinary medicine, which comprises a tube with at least one lumen for diagnosis, control, monitoring and/or treatment purposes and at least one lumen for the conveyance of a gaseous (or liquid) filling medium to and from an inflatable sliding member fixed to the tube in the region of the catheter tip. The invention was based on the object of providing a catheter which is more easily transported by the blood stream than the conventional catheters and which, moreover, is more effective in terms of removal of emboli, thrombi, calculi and concretion. The sliding member of a catheter according to the invention is designed and arranged in such a manner that it can be spread out by filling cavities present therein with the filling medium so as to form an umbrella whose convex curvature points in the catheter insertion direction and which extends around the catheter end.
