NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I [R is 1-18C alkyl; C* is asymmetric C; A is H or group of formula II (R<1> is 4-18C alkyl or alkoxy; n is 1 or 2)]. EXAMPLE:4-(2'-Propoxypropyloxy)benzenethiol. USE:An optically active synthetic intermediate or a liquid crystal composition. It can be bonded, without lowering the optical activity, with a functional material intermediate having intermolecular force and shape suitable for the forming of a liquid crystal, an LB membrane, a bimolecular membrane, etc., to afford free molecular design. PREPARATION:The compound of formula IV (e.g. 2-propoxypropanol) is produced from ethyl lactate of formula III used as a starting substance. The obtained compound is successively made to react with p-toluenesulfonic acid chloride and phenol to obtain the compound of formula V (e.g. propoxypropyloxybenzene), which is sulfonated, neutralized and made to react with PCl5. The objective compound of formula I is produced by reducing the resultant compound of formula VI with Zn and H2SO4.
