PURPOSE:To obtain ethylene glycol, by reacting H2 with CO in the presence of a highly active combined system catalyst consisting of Co, Ru and, if necessary, a tertiary phosphine compound in a solvent such as an ether, an aromatic hydrocarbon, etc. CONSTITUTION:H2 is reacted with CO in the presence of a combined system catalyst consisting of Co, Ru and, if necessary, a tertiary phosphine compound at 150-300 deg.C at 500-3,000kg/cm<2> to give ethylene glycol. In the catalyst, carboxylate, inorganic acid salt, oxide, hydroxide, etc., of Co are used as a Co compound and a halide, carboxylate, complex compound, etc., are used as an Ru compound. An atomic ratio of the Ru compound to the Co compound is 0.5-2. Triphenylphosphine, etc., are used as the tertiary phosphine compound and a ratio of number of gram atoms of the tertiary phosphine compound to Ru 1g atom is 0.1-5. EFFECT:The aimed substance has several times higher formation activity. |
