PURPOSE:To obtain a novel polymer useful as a raw material for synthesizing a living block copolymer with another monomer such as styrene, etc., by converting the carboxyl group of vinyl monomer into a substituent group consisting of a 4,4-substituted oxazoline skeleton and polymerizing the substituted substance of the vinyl monomer. CONSTITUTION:A vinyl monomer (e.g. 4-vinyl benzoic acid, cesium salt of 4- carboxy-alpha-methylstyrene, etc.) shown by formula I (R<3> is H or CH3; M is H or alkali metal atom) is reacted with a chlorinating agent (e.g. thionyl chloride, etc.) usually at 0-40 deg.C for 1-10hr to give an acid chloride, which is reacted with an amino-alcohol compound shown by formula II (R<1> and R<2> are alkyl) to form an acid amide compound, which is condensed and subjected to ring closure in the presence of the chlorinating agent to give a 4,4-xubstituted oxazolinyl group-substituted substance of the vinyl monomer, which is polymerized in the presence of an anionic polymerization initiator (e.g. n-butyllithium, etc.) to give a novel living polymer having a repeating unit shown by formula III (n is >=2).
