NEW MATERIAL:A porphyrine derivative of formula I [R<1> is H, lower alkyl, ethenyl; Y is halogen, acetoxy, carboxyl, cyano, lower alkoxycarbonyl, formula II (R2 is lower alkyl; X is halogen) or pyridinium halide which may be substituted]. EXAMPLE:7,12-Diethyl-3, 8, 13, 17-tetramethyl-2,18-bis(3-pyridiniopropyl)-21H,23H- porphinedibromide. USE:It is useful as a diagnostic or remedy for cancer. It has photosensitization action and affinity to cancer cells. PREPARATION:For example, a porphyrine derivative of formula III is acetylated or halogenated to give a compound of formula I where hydroxyls are converted into R3 (R3 is acetoxy or halogen).
