PURPOSE:To suppress effectively the generation of dropouts by forming a magnetic layer on a plastic film and winding a magnetic tape having no shear trace in the broadwise direction on the edge end face of both sides cut off in a prescribed width around a hub or a reel. CONSTITUTION:Since a magnetic tape raw fabric 2 run at a considerable speed in the direction of arrow A on a tape cut table 1 is cut off while being pressed at a sharp angle theta of >=5 deg. by a blade 5 of a cut knife 4 fixed to the cut table 1, no shear trace in the broadwise direction of the magnetic tape 6 is caused at the end face of both side edges of the magnetic tape 6. Thus, in winding the tape around a hub or the like, a magnetic tape roll having no shear trace in the broadwise direction of the magnetic tape 6 is obtained at both side edges, and the possibility of exfoliation of the magnetic layer from both the side edges of the magnetic tape 6 in operation and the shaving of the plastic film due to contact with a flange or the like of a guide roll or the like while being run in the recording and reproducing device are precluded. Thus, the generation of the dropouts is suppressed effectively and the electromagnetic transducing characteristic is improved sufficiently.
