PURPOSE:To accurately perform a test by eliminating the transmission loss of force for applying load to a test piece, by constituting a linear motor of the support vertically provided to a table and the movable part mounted on a crosshead and driving the crosshead by the linear motor. CONSTITUTION:A crosshead 7 is mounted to the intermediate parts of machine supports 3, 4 through movable members 9, 9. The movable parts 9, 9 constitute linear motors 10 along with the supports 3, 4. Then, by driving the linear motors 10 at both sides of said crosshead 7, the crosshead 7 moves along the supports 3, 4 up and down. An upper grasping jig 13 is mounted to the crosshead 7 through a load cell 11 and a lower grasping jig 14 is mounted to the table 2 and a test piece 15 is held by both grasping jigs. Then, the linear motors 10 is driven as the drive mechanism of the crosshead 7 to raise and lower the crosshead 7 with respect to the test piece 15 to apply testing load to the test piece 15. Therefore, the transmission loss of force applying load to the test piece is eliminated and, for example, both tensile and compression tests can be performed accurately.
