PURPOSE:To make the increase of the developing speed of a pattern possible, by a method wherein a space character is so constructed as not to carry out the pattern development and only to carry out the positional transfer. CONSTITUTION:CPU3 reads the character width, character height etc. from a character pattern generator 5 on the basis of the font, name, etc. of document information, obtains the output position of each character and stores the character, signal code, etc. together with its positional information into a page buffer 6. Now, when a space code is read from an input buffer 2, the character width at that time is examined and the positional information of the page buffer 6 is shifted by the number of dots corresponding to the space code. Thus, the positional information of the character code read next to one or successive space codes becomes the positional information shifted by the space to be stored in the page buffer 6. Then, because the space code is not stored in the page buffer 6, the developing speed to the character pattern is accelerated.
