PURPOSE:To contract an area occupied by the titled device by reciprocating an original platen on the upper surface of the device body at the time of copying, and at the time of non-copying, supporting the original platen around the body without projecting it from the lateral width of the body. CONSTITUTION:During the period that the original platen 17 is forward moved in the reverse direction against the arrow (x) direction, a copy image can be obtained and hooks 23a, 23b are abutted upon a stopper 26 at the time of forward movement, so that the original platen 17 is stationary always at a constant position. After obtaining the necessary number of copies, a paper discharge tray 30 is closed, the stopper 26 is stored in the body 15 and then the original platen 17 is moved in the reverse direction against the arrow (x) direction. Then, the original platen 17 is supported on the side wall of the body 15 by disengaging rails 21a, 21b from guide grooves 22a, 22b and suspending the hooks 23a, 23b on supporting shafts 24a, 24b. Consequently, the original platen 17 is not projected from the lateral width l3 of the body 15 at the time of non- copying and the area occupied by the device can be contracted.
