PURPOSE:To reserve a work area with a simple processing by connecting continuous used areas to use them again if there is not an unused area having a required length. CONSTITUTION:An unused area allocating means 2 of a work area management mechanism 1 compares the size of an unused area in a storage area 7 with a required length by a work area acquiring request, and an area having the required length is divided and is set to the used state to return to a request source if the unused area is larger, but an area start address setting means 3 is called if the unused area is smaller. The means 3 adds the size of the area noticed at present to the start address of this area to obtain the start address of the next area and calls a continuous used area connecting means 4. The means 4 collects these noticed area and next used area into one used area. A means 5 which reallocates the connected used area divides this used area to obtain the area having the required length and sets this area to the used state, and the control is returned to the request source.
