PURPOSE:To obtain Al alloy superior in forming workability without causing surface roughing, by soaking heat treating Al alloy contg. Cu, Mg, Mn and Ni, then rolling, heating, holding then cooling to room temp., applying a prescribed quantity of working, further heating and softening. CONSTITUTION:Al alloy contg. favorably by weight 3,4-5.5% Cu, 1.0-2.0% Mg, 0.2-1.2% Mn, 1.5-2.5% Ni, 0.05-0.2% Zr is treated as follows: Namely, ingot of the Al alloy is soaking heat treated, then hot rolled or further cold rolled to sheet material. Next, the material is heated, held at 470-550 deg.C, and cooled to room temp. by favorably >=0.6 deg.C/sec rate, more favorably by water quenching. Then the sheet material is worked by 20-75%, favorably cold worked at room temp., then softening treated at 360-500 deg.C by rapid heating by >=about 40 deg.C/hr. In this way, Al alloy without causing surface roughing even after the final working, e.g. high strength, Al alloy superior in forming workability is obtd.
