PURPOSE:To obtain a stainless steel combining remarkably excellent resistance to oxidation and corrosion at high temp. with superior wire drawing workability, by providing a composition containing C, Si, Mn, Ni, Cr, and one or more kinds among rare earth elements each by a prescribed quantity. CONSTITUTION:The stainless steel has a composition consisting of, by weight, <=0.15% C, <=1.0% Si, <=2.0% Mn, 7-13% Ni, 0.005-1.0% of one or more kinds among rare earth elements (Y, La, Ce, etc.), and the balance Fe. Said stainless steel is suitably used as material for braided body for use as catalyst support for exhaust gas cleanup protective material for exhaust gas pipe, etc. In that case, this stainless steel can be finally worked into fine wire of <=0.5mm diameter by hot or cold wire drawing working, which can be easily braid- worked to be formed into braided body.
