PURPOSE:To easily obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for insecticide, by using a specific butanal dialkylacetal as a starting raw material which is easily available on an industrial scale, dehalogenating the acetal by catalytic reduction and hydrolyzing the obtained novel intermediate. CONSTITUTION:A 3-(3-halogeno-4-alkoxyphenyl)-3-butanal dialkylacetal of formula I (R and R<1> are lower alkyl; X is Cl or Br) is dehalogenated by the catalytic reduction with H2 gas in the presence of a catalytic reduction catalyst such as Pd/C optionally using a base and a solvent to obtain a novel compound of formula II. The product is hydrolyzed under acidic condition using methanesulfonic acid, etc., to obtain the objective compound of formula III useful as an intermediate for agricultural chemicals or pharmaceuticals, especially 1-(3-phenoxyphenyl)-4-(4-alkoxyphenyl)-4-methyl-pentane derivative having high insecticidal and miticidal activities, rapid and long-acting effect and low toxicity to fish.
