A mechanism for controlling the movements 'of the cutting tool on an automatic lathe comprises a shaft 4 with cam-discs 5 mounted thereon which actuate a rocker assembly 6 carrying the tool slide 7 with a tool W conventionally mounted thereon. Also upon the slide 7 is mounted at 19 a bell-crank lever with arms 20 and 21, the arm 20 contacting the contour 12a of cam 12 under the pressure of spring 24 acting on the arm 21. The cam 12 controls the feed and return movements of the tool through the actuation of slide 7 and is driven together with gear 11 and bell cam 13 from the work spindle 1 via gear train 28 to 31. The traversing movements of the tool are effected from the bell cam 13 in cooperation with a follower 26a spring loaded to the machine frame. In operation, for example, cutting a thread as shown in Fig. 4, the rise " X " of the cam 12 determines the extent of the tool feed and return movements a and c respectively and the rise " Y " of the bell cam determines the forward and backward traverse b and d respectively. The infeed of the tool during the forward traverse denoted by the slope of line b is effected by the portion 5a of the cam 5. |
