PURPOSE:To shorten the processing time by using an external servo head positioning mechanism and the positioning mechanism of a disk device main body itself in parallel to execute the collation of write and that of positioning signal approximately simultaneously. CONSTITUTION:By a control part 6 and the servo head positioning mechanism 4, an index signal is written in a magnetic disk 2. Based on the signal in the disk 2, the write and collation of a clock signal are executed by the part 6 and a clock head part 3. Then a servo head 4a is positioned by the part 6, the servo head positioning control part 5 and the length measuring part of the mechanism 4, and the write and the collation of a servo pattern generated by the part 6 are executed through the head 4a based on the clock signal. Also, a start signal is issued by the part 6 to the control part 8 of the disk device main body, to actuate the servo head positioning mechanism 7 of the said main body. The positioning signal obtained at this time is transmitted from the part 8 to the part 6, and collated.
