PURPOSE:To ensure electroconductive connection of a counter electrode to a substrate for the counter electrode by using a Ti or Ta substrate having corrosion resistant electroconductive film formed on the inside surface as a material for the substrate of the counter electrode. CONSTITUTION:A counter electrode substrate 11 consists of Ti or Ta, and corrosion resistant electroconductive film 12 is formed on the surface, and a counter electrode 2 is bonded to the film 12 electroconductively. the film 12 is preferred to be formed of an electroconductive metal oxide (e.g. In2O3), titanium nitride, titanium silicide, or gold. The substrated 11 is arranged facing oppositely to a display electrode substrate 3 prepd. by forming transparent electroconductive film 4 and an electrochromic material 5 on a transparent substrate. By this constitution, the substrate 11 is bonded electroconductively to the electrode 2 securely, and increase of contact resistance is prevented and dispersion of response is reduced.
