PURPOSE:To easily set a format by providing a format graphic preparing means for displaying graphically a fundamental area frame excluding a blank from a form frame and a form size conforming with a format set value, on a format setting means. CONSTITUTION:When a format setting means 4b is started by a key for changing a format, said means refers to the value of a format data table 9 and displays a format set item screen, and when said means is started in order to prepare newly a document, it refers to the value of a standard value table 10 and displays the format set item screen. A standard value of a form is set to an A4 size being long vertically, and as for other set value, the value concerned of the standard value table 10 is set to a format buffer table and it is displayed. As for a format setting screen, the upper half and the lower half are format graphic display screen and a format set item screen, respectively, and on the format set item screen, when a cursor is moved to an item whose change is desired, and a selection number or a set value is inputted, the item concerned of the format buffer table is updated. Also, on the format graphic screen, when the cursor is moved to the top position of a fundamental area frame or a form frame by a muse 1, a format set value can be changed by changing the graphic.
