The workpiece is machined with a primary cutter in a primary machining mode and then workpiece portions left uncut are machined with a compensation cutter in a compersation wachining mode, all under numerical control. The control is effected by entering data on the workpiece shape, the desired final cut shape and the shape of the primary cutter into an NC apparatus. The uncut portions are then determined based on the entered data, and a compensation cutter suitable for cutting the uncut portions is selected. Data on the depth of cut and the clearance of the compensation cutter are set into the NC apparatus.
