Fireplace hearth for wood fires forming an enclosure 17 comprising at the front an opening 16 which can be closed or not, a horizontal hearth plate 3 which forms the floor of the hearth and a vertical hearth plate 9 which forms the back of the hearth, which enclosure assumes in its upper part the shape of a pyramidal cowl 14, via which it is connected to the smoke duct 22 of the hearth, said enclosure 17 of which is surrounded by a double wall 11/12 which communicates with a box 2 situated on the lower part below the horizontal hearth plate 3, which box 2 comprises at least one lateral shaft 2a/2b which can communicate with said enclosure and further comprises two ducts 5/7, the air circulation of which is controlled by a pivoting flap 10, which shaft 2a/2b communicates with a vertical duct 24/25 situated on at least one of the lateral sides of the opening 16 of the hearth, which duct 24/25 comprises at least one opening 26/27 with a closing flap 28/29, which flap is open during the functioning of the fireplace as a "closed hearth" to admit into the enclosure some of the draught air of the fireplace and the flow of which is controlled by a trap door 21 for closing the smoke duct 22, which is articulated to the upper part of the cowl 14. <IMAGE>
