PURPOSE:To improve recording and reproducing characteristics by forming a protective film having many projections on the surface onto the surface of a plating metal of a magnetic material thereby decreasing the frictional force between a magnetic head and magnetic memory medium and at the same time smoothing the plating layer of the magnetic material. CONSTITUTION:An intermediate plating layer 2 is plated on an aluminum substrate 1 and is so polished as to have a specular surface. The plating layer 3 of the magnetic material is provided on the layer 2. The thin underlying protective film 5 consisting of SiO2 is coated atop the layer 3 by a spin coating method and thereafter a coating liquid for the protective film of the same quality as the quality of the film 5 is coated thereon by a spray coating method to obtain the sprayed protective film 6 having ruggedness. The frictional force of the magnetic head and the magnetic recording medium is decreased and at the same time the layer 3 is made smooth as the friction is low even if the surface under the film 6 is not made rough. The recording and reproducing characteristics are thereby improved.
