PURPOSE:To require no change of data compression rate with respect to the change in type or input speed of an inputted character or graphic by encoding a straight line interpolation vector generated in a fixed method by using a statistical property thereof. CONSTITUTION:An encoder for compressing the data is constituted of a straight line interpolation generating part 11 for generating the interpolation vector for performing the straight line interpolation and an interpolation vector encoding part 12 for encoding the interpolation vector generated in tthe straight line interpolation vector generating part 11. The straight line interpolation vector generating part 11 presets a short code to the difference large in generation probability of the difference values of the straight line interpolation vector and a long code to the difference small in generation probability and the difference value to the straight line interpolation vector from the straight line interpolation vector generating part is obtained and a code corresponding to the difference value is outputted.
